la tempête de grêle - the hail storm

It was pretty exciting this afternoon in Amboise.  A hail storm blasted through what was beforehand a nice sunny day, leaving a thick covering of hail stones and providing the not so usual thunder and lightning.   Here you see the hail stone "pearls" on top of a few recently fallen leaves.  Is there any doubt that winter is on its way ?!

  1. Those storms have a way of moving quickly.

The hail looks about as large as I have seen it to be. It can be quite damaging even at that size.

    1. We were lucky to not have any damage. I've heard stories though about nearby vineyards losing 30% or more of their vines last year due to a violent hail storm.

  2. Amazing... we got nothing but a few dark clouds and some thunder yesterday.

    1. I was watching it arrive on radar (via internet of course) and it appeared to be very concentrated in a path that went right over Amboise.

  3. Thankfully small hail, pretty enough. We had one last Sunday.

    1. Yes, it was tame enough to enjoy without worrying too much about damage... as long as they stayed this size ! Even so, when combined with the thunder and lightning it was still pretty exciting.

  4. Goodness, we didn't have any hail in Blois. What time did it happen?

    1. It started around 2h15 and lasted less than 15 minutes. As I answered another comment, it was a pretty concentrated path that happened to go right over Amboise.

  5. Holy moly! We had a little hail, about that size, but it just bounced and disappeared. Luckily I had finished gardening by the time it and the wind and rain really got underway.

    1. Yes it covered the ground pretty good here. I was happy to have not been caught out in it as I had gone for a nice jog just before.

    1. Thanks Tanya ! It was actually kinda fun to watch it come down. Not a typical event for us.

  7. Goodness me some of the hail stones are quite big! Yup I'd say you may be in for as cold a winter as we are a hot summer! Did that make sense :))

    1. Unfortunately that is probably the case with this "new" weather. Stay cool.

  8. In terms of Mixed Media this would be a nice background to play with...
    J'espère qu'il n'y a pas eu trop de dommages!
