les obsèques à Saint Denis
L'église Saint Denis has been conducting Sunday services since the twelfth century. Today there were the funeral services for a much loved French celebrity Gonzague Saint Bris. He was a celebrated historian, TV personality, author of many books, and founder of an annual book festival. He grew up at Clos Lucé (former home of Leonardo da Vinci) here in Amboise.

Marché Nocturne d'Amboise
The Tuesday night market is held every year during July and August in front of the church Saint-Denis (which dates from the 12th century). Of course, the sun sets between 9 and 10 pm at this time of year so there's still plenty of light for shopping the market's vendors and enjoying a nice meal of local food and wine.

Saint-Denis sous la neige
More wishful thinking than actual snow in Amboise. Maybe one day this winter my wish will come true.

back door to Saint-Denis
OK, it's not really the back door to the church but it looks like it should be. The morning side light really emphasized all the textures brought on by centuries of wear.
Daily disclaimer: I'm currently
on a road trip and while I can queue up my daily posts, I can't queue up my
responses to your (most appreciated) comments nor to my CDP blogger friends'
blogs. I'll try to respond when possible of course.

Eglise St. Denis at night
Here is a November night shot of the local Catholic church. For going on 900 years old, it's looking pretty good. You might remember this church from this earlier post taken in the daylight and in the spring.

Eglise Saint Denis
The first church on this site was constructed in 475; this "modern" version was built in the twelfth century! It is still an active Catholic church. The site is near the end of rue Nationale which leads to the château of Amboise at the opposite end.
