This faithful guy is defending the entrance at the château at Loches. He has helpers though as one can see on the steps in the wider view below. Alas they all suffer from the same lichen infestation, but I kinda like that.
The lichen is a good thing! It shows how unpolluted the air is. I used to work for an organisation that cared for historic properties, including some prehistoric monuments. When anti GMO protesters painted some of our standing stones red (GM tomatoes apparently) it was a nightmare trying to clean them without killing the very rare and protected lichens that grew on the stones.
