la reine Claude

Claude de France was married to King Francis I (roi François premier) and thus was the queen (reine) of France.  This type of little sweet plums were "invented" at château Gaillard and named in honor of the queen.  They are still known today as reine-claudes.

  1. They do look appealing. I can't recall the last time I had a plum.

  2. When I saw the name, now I remember eating them when I was just a kid in France. They were the best! It's a distant memory but a welcome remembrance. Have a nice weekend.

  3. I had two reine-claude trees in my yard until they were blown over by the storm Xynthia in 2010.

    2. Thanks. Sorry to hear you lost it. A friend of ours has one (in Normandy) and he makes the best ever confiture with them.
